[Linux-ham] Damn Small Linux Install Question

OK, gang, I finally bit the bullet and installed DSL on my daughter's old Thinkpad 390E. In spite of the fact that this machine is 8 years old, the install went off without a hitch... almost.
It actually does extremely well so long as I am actually using it, but there is one bug I cannot run down. After almost exactly 10 minutes of inactivity, the screen freezes and the system has to be rebooted by turning the machine off and back on, something that linux dislikes greatly. The first time it happened, I thought it was some setting in the bios that was making the machine attempt to hibernate after 10 minutes of inactivity, so one by one, I disabled everything in the bios settings I could think of. None had any effect.
This version of DSL uses the 2.4.26 kernel. I found something online about the laptop mode possibly having an effect on this, but nothing I could make any sense of. Fact is, I have spent quite a few hours searching online for this sort of problem, but so far, I have been unable to see where anyone else had a similar problem. I believe the key to this is the 10 minutes, so is there some value I need to be looking for in the system files?
I welcome any ideas!!!

Norman
