Bzzt, same here. I thought they could. Maybe it was the Kenwood TH-79 that could tune 250-290.

Yow... coming up in less than an hour from now!
Both of my Yaesu dual-band rigs can tune that range but the RX sensitivity is likely down quite a bit vs. the ham bands. Worth a try though.
