Just for completions sake...
The problem at my client turned out to be a full partition. The volume
for / was completely full. They also did not have a separate partition
for /usr.
The server would lock-up whenever anything (like up2date) tried to
change some configuration files.
Up2date, btw, changes files found in: /etc/sysconfig/rhn/..
And *yes*, I did ask them to do a 'df -a' when they first called, and
they assured me that all the volumes had plenty of space: "I've been
battling this for two days, and I've been keeping an eye on the volume
space. No problems there!"
Next time I'll have them do a:
df -a |mail -s "My server vols" jonc@trilug.org
I found the problem in under 5 minutes... Still cost them $180 though.
