I understand that gaim's IRC plug-in is somewhat buggy and hard to use.
I tried it once and got nowhere. Xchat is very simple, you should have
no problems figuring it out.  If you want a console-based IRC client, I
recommend irssi instead of BitchX.

I have no idea what port the IRC network uses; I've never had to set
it.  So I guess don't worry about it.  From googling it looks like 6667
is right however.
