· Jim made comment about hardware RAID is better because it is independent
of operating system. Max mentioned software RAID is better for recognizing
hard disks that may not be exactly the same.
· LVM discussion ensued -> demo on N1 -> 80 GB HD -> 8 MB physical extent
o / 3072
o /usr 4096
o /var 2048
o /home 8192
o fails -> boot must not be on LVM
o retry
o /boot ext2 76 MB
o software RAID
o /hda2 25000 MB
o /hda3 25000 MB
o /hda5 26262 MB
o mounted as physical LVM
o set up logical volumes
o firewall ports -> other -> 123:udp,123:tcp,53:udp,53:tcp,115:udp,115:tcp
(ntp, dns, ssh)
· Demo on N1 RAID installation on single hard disk with software RAID5
· LVM and RAID methods demonstrated together -> provides flexibility to
change partition sizes
