[TriLUG] Defragmentation

I was asked this question today at work and realized that I have no idea if 
it's true.

Apparently my cow-orker and boss had been talking about Linux, and one stated 
that ext2 partitions did not need to be defragmented, and the other 
maintained vehemently that it did.  They turned to me as arbiter, but I don't 
know, and a simple search turned up only more people asking the question...

So I turn to you.

Do you need to defragment your ext2 (or 3 or reiserfs) partitions, and if so, 
how?
