A slap on the wrist? Seems more like a pat on the head to me. "Microsoft,
please go forth and rescue our economy." Like any one company could do that.
The DOJ fought for five years for this? Didn't the Consent Decree of 1995
say essentially the same thing? I think the problem here is that Microsoft
does not acknowledge the legitimacy of *any* laws or rules governing its
behavior, and I see nothing in the settlement that chages that.
I'm waiting for the Microsoft press release (taken right out of the OJ
Simpson playbook): "Microsoft is now dedicating itself to searching the golf
courses of south Florida for The Real Monopolist." If Microsoft had just
hired Johnnie Cochran, they wouldn't have gotten themselves into this mess in
the first place. I can hear it now..."Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, if
IE isn't sh*t, you must acquit!"
