there is an (alleged) fix for this at

  ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/marcelo/2.4/testing

and this is apparently a serious enough bug that, if this fix really
solves the problem, the final result may be released as 2.4.16.  ouch.
