[TriLUG] question about kernel/pcmcia support

i just realized i'm a little unclear on the concept of
pcmcia support in linux.

obviously, there is pcmcia support directly in the kernel code
and, when building a new kernel, you can select it. fair enough.

however, there is also the kernel-pcmcia-cs rpm, which contains
utilities for managing pcmcia cards, and which is installed when
you select "Laptop Support" at install time.

how do these two features work together? what if you neglect
to install the kernel-pcmcia-cs rpm? what value does the kernel
pcmcia code have then? is this making any sense?
