I got the CD player to work.. by using Grip 2.96. As a normal user I enter:

> grip -d /dev/cdromX &

I get get /dev/cdromX by entering:

> ls -l /dev/cd*

because X changes as I reboot the system.

Something is having difficulty with the /dev/cdrom symlink and I am not
having success figuring it out. Each time I reboot, the /dev/cdrom symlink
returns pointing to /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 (which is a busted symlink itself).

Here's another related symptom I cannot explain:

> rm -f /dev/cdrom
> ls -l /dev/cd*
<no /dev/cdrom>
> ln -s /dev/cdrom/cdromX /dev/cdrom
ln: `/dev/cdrom': File exists
> ls -l /dev/cd*
</dev/cdrom->/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 exists now; why? how?>

These CD players all want to use /dev/cdrom. Some of them will take a
/dev/cdromX device and some won't.

I am searching the web for clues. I found some vague leads. Any help would
be appreciated.

Mike
