Note it's not a full desktop.  Just a wm.

If you can get your hands on KDE 1.2, it was much leaner & faster than 2.x
series. Gnome was always big and slow.  It's more of a recent development
for KDE.

Stay away from Enlightenment.  It takes forever to start up on my box, and
I've got a 750MHz Duron with half a gig of RAM!
