It is possible to run X apps under Aqua.  The XFree86 server works. From
http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.0/RELNOTES2.html#8: "On Mac OS X, a new
rootless mode is added to the XDarwin X server. This allows X clients to
display windows on the Aqua desktop."
