It's worth mentioning that the installer for Red Hat Linux 7.2 will
perform the ext2 -> ext3 upgrade automatically if you agree to it.  I did
this on two systems and it worked perfectly.  Are the other major
distributions supporting ext3 "out of the box" yet?
