I tried to put linux on an old ppc which had 80mg ram.  There were about 6
distributions i tried, and none would work, till I tried the text based
mandrake install.  It looks like the default installer uses X, which
sucks up all of the memory.

Anyway I did manage to get linux on the ppc -- you might try the
text install.  You might want also try sticking in an extra dimm/simm
just for the installation too.
