As far as hardware goes, have you checked with state surplus?  I think
NCSU has it's own surplus (maybe(?)) separate from the state.  Maybe UNC
and Duke have similar surplus departments.  Another thing to do, and I
think someone on this list may have suggested it, is to do some dumpster
diving behind RTP firms.  You can scrounge up systems or components. Watch
out for broken glass and other sharp objects though.

With either state surplus inventory or some dumpster diving, you may be
able to put together a system from scavenged parts.
