[TriLUG] Moving from Exchange to Linux/IMAP/POP

I would love to hear what IMAP servers folks like. I've heard a lot of
folks really like Cyrus.

For a simple IMAP server (and proof of concept) you can use the wu-imap
server (run via xinetd) and loaded by default on to a RedHat server.

Migration shouldn't be too bad. When you move a client, they will need to
download all their email to their local spool. Then you'll move their
routing to the new IMAP server, and they will attach to the new server, and
optionally sync their old mail (now stored locally) up to the new IMAP
server.

A few warnings about wu-imap: it doesn't allow the client to create folders,
and it doesn't allow sub-folders in mailboxes.

To get IMAP to work similar to Exchange, you'll want to change your default
mailbox format. The default is that all the mail goes to a single file.
You'll want to change that so that all the mail goes to a single directory,
and each message is a separate file. I recommend that you set the mail for
each person to go to their home directory in a directory called
"../mail/inbox/"

That will make it easy to have folders inside folders for your mail. It
will also make indexing of messages much faster.

Good Luck.
