I typed "cpio tutorial" (with the double quotes) into google.com and
got some nice tutorials.  Also there is 1996 Linux Journal article
(URL:  http://linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=1213) which is a pretty
clear exposition on cpio usage. And, of course, the man page is fairly
informative (after you read the tutorials).
