[TriLUG] Questions on building a Linux box

I'm looking at a build your own linux type of system. I'm curious of the
documentation. I've looked at the Gentoo and Linux From Scratch methods, but
I'd like to get more documentation on the foundation, such as installing a
generic kernel and such. How can this be accomplished on a system that
doesn't have any OS? That's the kind of documentation I'm looking for.
