[TriLUG] Questions on building a Linux box

I'm having problems with Gentoo because my laptop doesn't boot from the CD
and I'm trying to find a boot/rescue disk or a way to build one that has the
d*&n tools needed.

Roy,

I believe these types of distros install just enough to build the
kernel, starting off with a small system with the requisite compiler and
kernel source.  That's what I noticed with Gentoo when I first
*attempted* to install it.  It's a pain in the butt to me, but I'm
impatient and really don't care if I have a couple hundred packages that
I don't actually use installed :)
