sounds like there is no window manager running.
usually the last thing vncserver does is to fire up a window manager --
look in ~/.vnc/xstartup:

Make sure you have the window manager specifed and it runs on your box. I've
tried to run kde with 'startkde', but that was a few versions ago.
If you know which DISPLAY you are connecting to you can try to put
an xterm : `xterm -display localhost:1` .
Also, there is an article in linux journal magazine, you might try to find
it if you still are having trouble. probably last march or so.
