if you just want to run a router/firewall/vpn box, you might want to check
out smoothwall (or a fork called ipcop). installs on just about anything in
about 10 minutes, managed via a browser. does NAT, VPN, port forwarding,
firewall, intrusion detection, dynamic dns, and a few other things. i've
been using it at home for about six months with my roadrunner account and
haven't touched it except to change my port forwarding and firewall rules.
all you need is an IDE system (scsi not supported) and two network
interfaces (dialup, isdn, ethernet). very nice package -
