Hi everyone,

After what felt like a hundred attempts at a helpful Google search, I
finally found the problem.

I had "Plug and Play OS" enabled in my BIOS.  3Com PCI Ethernet cards and
some motherboards do not get along well with FreeBSD when this is enabled.

I disabled it, and all is well.

Thanks for listening to my rant.  Back to our regularly scheduled
programming now.
