Unfortunately I'm still back on 2.2.19pre17, which seems to support usb
but not usb mass storage. Sounds like a project for next month.

For the record, what happened is that the key was recognized flawlessly:
(from /var/log/messages:)
Jun 10 08:55:56 perrin kernel: usb.c: USB new device connect, assigned
device nu
mber 2
Jun 10 08:55:56 perrin kernel: Manufacturer: IBM
Jun 10 08:55:56 perrin kernel: Product: IBM USB Memory Key
Jun 10 08:55:56 perrin kernel: scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage
devic
es
Jun 10 08:55:56 perrin kernel: scsi : 2 hosts.

And it shows up in /proc/bus/usb/devices:
T: Bus=02 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=01 Cnt=01 Dev#= 2 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=16 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=0a16 ProdID=8888 Rev= 1.00
S: Manufacturer=IBM
S: Product=IBM USB Memory Key
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=80 MxPwr=100mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=06 Prot=50 Driver=usb-storage
E: Ad=02(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl= 0ms
E: Ad=82(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl= 0ms

And in /proc/scsi/usb:
perrin:/proc/scsi/usb# cat 1
   Host scsi1: usb-storage
        Vendor: IBM
      Product: IBM USB Memory Key
Serial Number: None
     Protocol: Transparent SCSI
    Transport: Bulk
          GUID: 0a1688880000000000000000

But can't be mounted or mke2fs'ed:
perrin:/proc/scsi/usb# mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/tmp
mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/sda1 as a block device
       (maybe `insmod driver'?)
