Hi folks,
I thought there might be a few people on this list that might be
interested in this. The fourth weekend of June every year is
designated as a "Field Day" for Amateur Radio (Ham Radio).
Field day is designed to test radio operators ability to
operate under "emergency" conditions. (i.e. batter powered,
non-permanent antennas, etc..).
Even if you are not a ham radio operator, Field Day can
be an interesting exercise. One of the big things this
year is that groups are being encouranged to have a
station for people who have never been on the air before.
This way, even if you don't have a license, you can come
out an learn more about ham radio, and perhaps even
make some contacts. :-)
I know there are groups in Raleigh and Cary that are probably
organizing something (Al, can you tell us about the Cary group).
I don't have their information, but for those who are in
Durham, here's the information about what the Durham FM Association
is doing. Sorry about the late notice, but it just now occurred
to me that this might be of interest. (Which is unusual, since
Linux and ham radio is a natural match since each allows you the
freedom to create your own stuff.)
Anyway, if anyone has any questions, please feel free to e-mail me.

Greetings All,
This weekend is the annual ARRL Field Day communications exercise. I would
like to invite everyone to attend. We will begin setup on Friday after 2pm.
We will continue with setup on Saturday morning and continue till completed.
We will begin operating at 2pm on Saturday and continue for 24 hours. On
Saturday evening around 6 pm, we will be having a cook out of traditional
fare (hamburgers, hotdogs). Everyone is invited to join in on the food and
fun.
All are invited to attend. You may drop by anytime and leave when you like.
We encourage everyone to join in with the radio operations but that is your
choice.
Attached is a couple of maps of the area where we will be setting up camp.
If you are in Durham the directions are as follows:
1. Starting from the intersection of Guess Rd. and Horton Rd. (This is the
Willodaile shopping center, there is a Burger King restaurant at the corner),
procede north for 5.5 miles.
2. At 5.5 miles you will be at the intersection of St. Mary's road and Guess
Rd. Turn left here and procede west for 7.7 miles.
3. Once you have travelled 7.7 miles on St. Mary's road, you will be at the
intersection of St. Mary's and Baldwin Roads. Baldwin is also known as
SR1554. There is a nursery located at this intersection as well. The name
of the nursery is "Reba and Roses". Turn right onto Baldwin and procede
north approximately 1.35 miles.
4. If you have followed the directions you should be right at the gate
entrance to the site. Turn left and procede onto the property. This site is
located proximal to the intersection of Baldwin and Miller roads. You can
use this intersection as a reference point if you are looking for the site on
a map.
Talk-in will be on 147.225 positive offset with no CTCSS required for access.
I will be monitoring this repeater all day friday and saturday. Anyone that
is interested in assisting with setup on friday or on joining us on saturday
can call on this frequency.

This would be a very good time to hang out with the Open Source
people, before they get formally reclassified as a national security
