I switched to an Antex SX600 case, which has a case fan which helps ventilate 
the processor that sits just under the power supply.  But that didn't solve 
the lockup problem and Monarch Computer tech support sent an RMA number for 
the motherboard combo (Tyan S2460, two 1.3 GHz Duron processors, 1 512 MB 
Corsair memory chip).  The replacement combo has been running SuSE 8 and W2K 
for 5 days now without locking up, so I'm assuming the original combo had 
some hardware problem.  Thanks to all who answered for your helpful advice.
