Actually, your subject line is misleading.  ASCII characters are from
0-127 and do *NOT* include the "extended" characters of the iso-8859-1
(Latin1) character set to which you are referring.  There is no reliable
way to type these on Linux; there are "softkeys" you can set up in X, but
I have never understood how to make them work properly.  Hopefully someone
else can provide a better answer, but I wanted to make sure you realize
these characters are NOT a part of ASCII.
