In addition to Jeff's suggestion, you can try seeing if xmms plays CDs
(it should, but opening /dev/cdrom as the path). I don't think it'll
work, though, given the symptoms you've listed.

Next thing to check - the Volume control panel should list CD Audio. If
the cable is connected, is the volume control for it muted?

I've been doing that, and it's great as a jukebox when I work at home.
I've also set up an icecast server inside my house, that I can connect
to with my laptop when I'm not in the same room as my desktop.
