I believe postfix also uses .forward files.  You might consider,
however, checking into what you use as your Mail Delivery Agent (MDA).
A lot of modern linux distributions use procmail as the MDA and
if that's the case you could automatically sort out e-mail from 
your mailing lists and only have the autoresponder handle personal
e-mail.  Or, you could have it respond to specific subjects, etc...
