[TriLUG] Sound recording/editing/archiving - where to start?

FWIW, sound is nowhere near as processor intensive as video editing. A
used Mac G3 will be more than enough machine to do sound editing. OS X
10.2 "Jaguar" is coming out very soon which will supposedly reduce the
hardware requirements for running OS X and allow older systems to become
more usable.

One audio tool that I use for videography work is "Audacity", which is
an open source app on linux that has been ported to the native OS X
GUI. On my 800MHz G4 it is extremely responsive and I have no reason to
doubt that it would run very well on lesser hardware.

I used to do sound editing about 12 years ago or so and the main problem
back then as I recall was NOT the processor (think 386/486) but hard
disk capacity & memory. MP3 and OGG were not even thought of back then,
so you were usually working with raw uncompressed audio. MP3 of course
wouldn't be playable on a processor of that vintage anyway. The Mac guy
back then had it all over us on the PC's. I think the playing field may
be level today in terms of capabilities but I've gained a lot of respect
for the Mac over the last month in terms of hardware/software
integration.
