Admittedly, it didnt' change "just for 8.0" - it changed in time for
8.0. The patent didn't apply until 8.0, and wasn't enforcable until
8.0.

Sure it did. They opened the door to charge .75/decoder shipped. They
state in the press release that free projects won't be pursued, but
nowhere does it say that in the actual license. I checked, just to be
sure.

Fear mongering, or actually practicing what they preach about fair and
open markets, fair and open standards, fair use, and open source?

Which is cool. Hell, Linux is all about choice, and while I work for
Red Hat, and prefer their product, I have no problem with anyone else
making their own decisions.
Buy and use Mandrake.
Use Debian, but I expect their mp3 stance to change, too.
There's always SuSE, and the UnitedLinux distros.
Don't forget Gentoo, or Linux-From-Scrath, or Sorcerer GNU/Linux
I hear *BSD is nice, too.
Knock yourself out. Choose what's best for you. Thats' what it's all
about, right?
