[TriLUG] Digital imaging on Linux

Anybody have advice for getting started with digital cameras and scanners on 
LInux?  

Is it safe to assume that all major brand digital cameras will work with a 
Linux system for downloading images? 

Is the setup described here

typical - the flash card in the camera is configured as a SCSI drive - so 
after being mounted, you just copy image files from the flash card to the 
hard drive?

So the only requirement is that the Linux box needs a USB port?
