IIRC Cups has ecellent documentation. A couple of years ago, I installed 
cups "from scratch" and it wasn't that painful. I know it runs on MacOS 
X (*BSD) and AIX.

So there's a good probability that it will be mostly painless.

In fact, cups.org describe this system as a Unix prinitng thinggy 
(Common UNIX Printing System).
