Well, what do you know. No sooner did I write this, than there
was an article on Kuro5hin.org that talked about e-voting.
Here are a few links that anyone thinking about e-voting should
take a look at:
http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2002/11/7/222359/785
http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/2002/11/05/voting_machines/index.html
http://www.free-project.org/
The last link there is for Gnu.FREE, an internet voting system.
Note that the people who wrote Gnu.FREE think that secure internet
voting isn't really possible. Let me quote them:
From my experience of designing and developing GNU.FREE over the past
three years it has become clear that creating an Internet Voting
system sufficiently secure, reliable and anonymous is extremely
difficult, if not impossible. As Bruce Schneier points out "a secure
Internet voting system is theoretically possible, but it would be the
first secure networked application ever created in the history of
computers."
So, will we ever have secure voting over the Internet? Highly
unlikely. Will, however, we actually have voting over the Internet
in the near future. Probably. :-/
Cheers,
Tanner
