Firstly get rid of services you don't need.
Turn off the animations in KDE and any other eye candy.
You can use KDE with some alternative window managers that are much
lighter weight.
If you recompile packages for it, strip the symbols from the object
modules before linking.
Recompile your kernel to only include the stuff you need.
