KDE 3 and gcc-3.2 are speeding things up. I felt the difference in my
K6-2-400/256.
Aside from what everybody has said to you:
- Reduce the desktops to one
- turn off antialiasing
- turn off font server and add the font paths to the XFree86 conf file
- try working with hdparm
- try using ext2 (ext3 has a little overhead)
- turn off the Kclipboard, sound server
(artsd),Korganizer/AlarmDaemon...
- do not use backgroud image, just one plain solid colour
- use a simple window decoration
- do not use KDM/GDM/XDM. Boot on runlevel 3 and startx
- Use a big machine and recompile srpms for KDE & XFree for the target
arch of your small computer (i686?)
- Get a big computer and do LTSP
And, nevertheless, $8 for 256MB is a good deal. Or use qvwm. It's *very*
fast.
