hda is a three-week-old bitwise copy of hdc.  (hdc used to
be the laptop's hd.)

grub, not lilo.

    boot: linux root=/dev/hda11

came up with hdc again.  hda11 is '/'.

no bootable dos floppies around.

currently trying: remove hda and reboot.  then zap the first few
sectors of the hd, power down, put hda back in, and reboot.
hdc's partition table should be gone, so it should really come up
on hda.

i'm hoping.
