Yep, that was in my original thread that I was using a RH 8 box in runlevel
3, and that I had checked that indeed
#kern.*	/dev/console
was commented out in /etc/syslog.conf. There are no /dev/tty* lines. I'm
still looking for ideas what I might have missed
