Check /etc/modules.conf
and output of /sbin/lsmod

iirc compaq builtin NICs need tlan module.
Make sure it is assoc w/ proper interface in /etc/modules.conf
look for:  alias eth0 tlan
           alias eth1 some.other.module
	   
lsmod will tell you if driver (module) is loaded

MDK scripts sometimes break the association if you add NIC 
i.e eth0 may not be assoc w/ tlan module...
(I have seen this happen w/ an older Mandrake distro)
