[TriLUG] Apt-get for Red Hat and Mandrake problems with it?? from Lockergnome's PenguinShell

I've been playing with apt-get for a bit, using it to upgrade my system. 
I noticed that it installed i386 packages for packages which are 
available for my arch (i686). These include things like glibc and 
openssl. Is there a way to configure apt-get to retrieve and install 
packages optimized for my arch over the standard i386? FWIW, I have the 
default sources.list from freshrpms, and the mirror has the i686 
packages in their i386 archives.
