[TriLUG] Login not grabbing NIS/passwd diff

I recently setup my new machine here at work with
RH8.0 and have been having problems with logging on as
a NIS user with a local passwd change. For instance
my local passwd entry looks like:
+cadadmin::::::/bin/bash
my NIS passwd entry looks like:
cadadmin:password:1004:105:CAD
Administrator:/home/cadadmin:/bin/ksh
and finally my nsswitch.conf looks like:
passwd: files nis
My strange problem is that when I login to my machine
as cadadmin it puts me in ksh even though I have an
override in the local passwd file. I've tried
changing the nsswitch.conf entry to use "compat"
instead of "nis" but this causes sudo not to recognize
me as a valid sudoer. When I do use "nis" and then I
will get logged on using ksh but if I "su - cadadmin".
If I put "nis" first then then I won't get a bash
shell when su'ing. Any ideas on what's going on?
I've checked the archive and so far nothing via
google.
TIA,
Mike
