[TriLUG] system trashed - trying to recover

mail server config files: /etc/mail (?) for sendmail or /etc/postfix.  also 
/etc/aliases.

heck, just backup all of /etc, it's not that large.  trust me, if you don't 
you'll find that you're missing something you need down the road, thank you 
mr. murphy.
