just had to do this myself:

chmod a+r /dev/ttyS[0-5] (mine was 0)

to get my ir remote reciever to work with the irman module in xmms.

btw to all:

lirc is not supported under the redhat standard kernels, and i've been
looking at building the standard kernel for myself to support it, but
haven't been able to find too many docs on the differences betwx the rh8
kernels and the standard, or about building a std kernel for rh8. any
tips anyone?
