A follow up on this ...

the perl script DOES write a file > 2GB (he had it up to 3GB) on his 
system, as well as mine (which also runs RedHat 8.0).  but, on my 
system, ....

- i can write an ISO (using mkisofs) of a directory > 3GB
- but if there is a file in there > 2GB, it is not copied into the ISO

so are the problems we are experiencing compilation problems and the 
executables do not support files > 2GB?
