While it is not exactly your situation, I contribute this just as a
reference datapoint.  I migrated from RH to SuSE.  My /home filesystem
survived without a problem.  After I got SuSE up, I then switched the
filesystem from ext2 to ext3 without problems (following the advice from
a couple of people on this list).
