Hi Jack,
Mandrake is a completely different distribution than Redhat. It
emphasizes ease of use, on the desktop, at the command line,
in packaging, in servers, etc... Just about everything in
Mandrake is highly integrated.
As far as advantages or disadvantages, it's probably just a matter
of taste. Both RH and Mandrake are excellent distributions.
Both will do whatever you would like them to do. I prefer
Mandrake, myself, because to me it makes a lot more sense than
RH does. It has a consistent packaging scheme. It has an
integrated menuing system that spans all the different types
of X environments (KDE, Gnome, Windowmaker, E, etc....). It
puts a lot of emphasis on security too. AFAIK, it's one of
the only distributions integrated with a comprehensive security
system (called msec) which doesn't just address firewall issues,
but also addresses everything from user permissions to patching
the kernel to make it more secure. Mandrake has also had an
integrated software manager (that even does dependency resolution)
for several years now. In addition, if you want software that
Mandrake for one reason or another cannot provide, a group called the
Penguin Liberation Front has put them together in a format
that integrates flawlessly with the Mandrake software manager.
So, as I said, either distribution will do what you want, they
may just take different paths to get you there.
Cheers,
Tanner
