I second this - patience may help (try burning at 12x or 16x instead of
24x, for example).

You could also try without the front-end to see if that makes any difference
(cdrecord -v speed=16 dev=0,1,0 -data xxxx.iso). Substitute speeds and
devices (you can figure out the device id with "cdrecord -scanbus") as
appropriate.
