Hi John,
Let me throw in something for the Florida market...SUCKS. I was out of
work for nine months before taking this job, and I have other friends
who have been out of work for nearly two years. It's ugly down here.
Lot's of techies that do not want to move, so anything that comes open
has fierce competition. Also, companies know this and thus do not pay
what they used to. I took a 15% paycut, and some of my friends took
bigger cuts because companies know they can pay less given the current
lack of jobs.
My advice...if you have a job, STAY THERE!!!!
Dave

Hi John,
I have to pretty much agree with Jason, Rob and Chris.
If your looking for an IT job in NC - the market
sucks. I was out of work for 8 months and was looking
for work longer than that since Nortel was laying off
left and right(and still is somewhat from what I
heard). I ended up finding a computer operator job
for a while, then ended up moving back to Indiana to
get a sysadmin job. I'm also looking to go back but
it looks like it going to be YEARS not MONTHS before
the job market is going to get good enough to do so.
There are just too many QUALIFIED people out there
looking for work is my experience. It kills me
everytime I hear one of those IT training houses
advertise ". . . did you know over 500 thousand IT
jobs will go unfilled this year?". I want to gag
everytime I hear that statistic.
I'll put in my 2cents about DC too - from my looking
experience if you have a clearance or are ex-military
you have a shot, otherwise forget it. One of the main
reasons I like my current position is a possibility at
a security clearance, but again this is just a shot
since from what I hear they take longer and are harder
to obtain ever since 9/11.
On the bright side NC, especially the RTP/RDU area is
a GREAT place to live and raise a family. TriLUG is a
great group of people to hang out with and the
backgrounds are stellar. You would not believe the
knowledge pool that is there - awesome group to learn
from and pass along knowledge to. If you get a chance
to go, jump at it and don't look back!
Regards,
Mike
