PostgreSQL can handle millions upon millions of rows without choking 
and on relatively modest hardware.

I don't have battlefield experience with MySQL to comment though just 
looking at a MySQL powered site like slashdot.org I have to believe 
that its limitations are pretty high for a lightweight RDBMS.
