[TriLUG] Ogg vs. mp3

Well, let's see how many toes I can step on.

It's primarily a legal thing.  Ogg is not patent encumbered, while mp3
is.  This means that at some theoretical future date, the patent owners
of mp3 could knock on your door and ask where all their money is, but
it's probably not a real concern for users.  (companies like RH for
example *do* have to worry about it.)

As far as the quality, several people claim that for a given bit rate
the ogg is better quality/smaller, but the difference is so slight that
if you need it, you probably a) spend WAY more money on speakers and
headphones than I do, and b) have so little HD space that perhaps you
don't need to be hoarding music files...

That being said, I use Ogg, and I am only upset that I have to convert
to mp3 if I want to use any of those dedicated music file playing
devices out there.  When's the first HW Ogg player going to come out?
