(just speculating) there are still some early MP3 implementations out 
there that seem to choke on ID3 tags.  This is why, for example, 
OpenBSD project's mp3s don't have ID3 tags.

Personally, I think all of these crippled early implementations that 
haven't evolved (or upgraded) should be left twisting in the wind.  I 
guess it's kind of like saying all shell servers should have telnetd 
running because there are a couple of PDP-11's out there that don't 
have an ssh client.
